Davis was born in Canada, and during her childhood, she was raised in New Jersey, Utah, and Texas. She is a graduate of both the College of William & Mary and the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. Prior to beginning her career as a novelist, Davis moved to New York City to pursue a career as an actress. Later, she enrolled as a student in the School of Journalism at Columbia University, and after graduating, worked as a journalist before beginning her career as a novelist of historical fiction.
